So you just got a new tattoo — congrats! Whether it’s your first or your tenth, taking care of your new ink is key to making sure it heals well and looks great for years to come.
Here’s everything you need to know in plain English.
✨ Step 1: Leave the Bandage Alone (for a little bit)
Your artist will wrap your tattoo before you leave the shop. Leave it on for 2–4 hours (unless your artist says otherwise). This keeps bacteria out and protects the area while it’s fresh.
🧼 Step 2: Gently Wash Your Tattoo
Once you remove the bandage:
-
Wash your hands.
-
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel — don’t rub!
🧴 Do not apply anything yet. Let it breathe for a few minutes.
💧 Step 3: Moisturize (But Not Too Much)
After your tattoo air-dries, apply a thin layer of a tattoo-safe moisturizer like:
-
Aquaphor
-
Hustle Butter
-
Unscented lotion (like Aveeno or Lubriderm)
💡 Less is more — you don’t want it to be greasy. Too much moisture = clogged pores.
🔁 Step 4: Wash + Moisturize 2–3 Times a Day
For the next 10–14 days, repeat:
-
Gently wash your tattoo with fragrance-free soap
-
Pat dry
-
Apply a thin layer of moisturizer
🛑 Don’t use anything with alcohol, fragrance, or exfoliants.
🚫 What Not to Do While Healing:
-
❌ No swimming (pools, hot tubs, oceans) for at least 2 weeks
-
❌ No scratching or picking — yes, it’s going to itch!
-
❌ No tight clothing that rubs the area
-
❌ No direct sun exposure — keep it covered or shaded
☀️ After It’s Healed
Once it’s fully healed (around 3–4 weeks):
-
Use SPF if it’s exposed to the sun
-
Moisturize regularly to keep it looking fresh
-
Enjoy your new ink 💪
